How We Research and Score Plug-In Solar Kits
WattRank uses documented editorial research: public certification records, clearly attributed third-party laboratory findings, measured owner data, product documentation and dated price checks. We do not currently operate a physical test lab or present products as tested by WattRank. Ratings express our assessment of the available evidence, and comparisons must keep unlike configurations separate.
What our scores are — and are not
A WattRank score is an editorial assessment of documented evidence, not the result of a WattRank laboratory test and not a customer rating. That distinction matters in a market where certification claims can outrun certification reality. We record the sources behind product facts and score notes, distinguish vendor claims from independent evidence, and flag gaps instead of treating missing evidence as proof.
We do not currently operate a physical test lab or publish hands-on WattRank reviews. Third-party tests are identified as third-party evidence. We also avoid review and aggregate-rating structured data that could misrepresent an editorial score as a user rating or a WattRank lab result. A certification claim is treated as unverified until it can be tied to the exact model and scope in an appropriate record.
The five criteria and their weights
Certification & safety evidence
Verifiable component or system listings (UL 1741/ETL, VDE, TÜV), battery chemistry and enclosure ratings, and independent lab findings such as electromagnetic-compatibility results. Marketing language earns nothing; directory-checkable listings earn everything.
Independent review consensus
What testers with instruments found: Stiftung Warentest, established tech publications, and long-term owner measurements. We weight measured findings over impressions, and long-term data over launch reviews.
Output & configuration
AC output relative to its class, MPPT design, expandability and platform quality — judged within the product's configuration class, never across classes.
Value
Price per watt against same-class competitors, warranty length and coverage, and for batteries the price per usable kilowatt-hour of storage.
Buyer experience
Real availability, app quality, local-control options, subscription paywalls and the vendor's support track record.
Rules that constrain every ranking
Configuration classes are compared like with like: an inverter-only product, a complete grid-tied kit and a battery-integrated system are different purchases, so price-per-watt and value judgments never cross class boundaries. Certification language is precise: UL 3700 is an Outline of Investigation with no system-level certified products as of mid-2026, and no WattRank page describes a product as certified without directory-checkable evidence. Legality is never asserted from absence: where no framework exists we say so, with sources, rather than calling a product legal or illegal. And availability is stated per region, because a kit that is excellent in Germany may be neither purchasable nor compliant in Ohio.
Where the evidence comes from
In descending order of weight: public certification directories such as UL Product iQ and Intertek; attributed independent laboratory findings, including Stiftung Warentest; measured long-term owner data; established publications that disclose their test methods; and vendor documentation. We use vendor material for attributable specifications and configuration details, not as independent proof of performance or savings. When evidence applies only to a predecessor or related model, that limitation must remain visible.
Updates and corrections
Scores are revisited when material evidence lands: a new independent test, a certification granted or withdrawn, a significant price move, or a credible safety finding. Each product page carries its last-verified date. If you believe a score rests on outdated or incorrect evidence, tell us with a source — corrections with evidence outrank everything else in our queue, and our editorial policy explains how commercial relationships are kept away from these decisions.
