Nonprofit Bright Saver Takes At-Cost Plug-In Solar Kits Nationwide

Hannah LindqvistBy Hannah Lindqvist · Last reviewed

Bright Saver, a California nonprofit, is now taking nationwide pre-orders for its at-cost plug-in solar kits: members pay $285.30 for a 180 W panel-and-microinverter kit that lists at $499 for non-members, with a $29 annual membership. It is the lowest-priced legitimate entry point in the US market — with real caveats on coverage and scale.

The most interesting price in US plug-in solar right now belongs to a nonprofit. Bright Saver, based in California, sells small plug-in kits to its members at wholesale cost — $285.30 for the 180 W Flex180 kit that non-members see listed at $499, with membership priced at $29 a year. In July 2026 the organization opened pre-orders nearly nationwide, with shipping to the contiguous US planned from August. Each kit pairs a 180 W panel with a 120 V microinverter and a 15-foot cord, designed to hang on a railing, fence or wall and plug into a standard outlet.

The model matters because it attacks the US market's defining problem from a new angle. American kit prices run two to four times European levels — a structural consequence of a small legal market carrying US-specific certification and hardware costs — and Bright Saver simply removes the retail margin from that equation. At roughly $1.75 per watt for members, the Flex180 undercuts most of the US market while keeping a certified microinverter in the box.

The caveats are equally real. The kits are small: 180-360 W offsets a baseline load, not a household. Availability currently excludes Maine, New York and Vermont — ironically including two states with effective plug-in frameworks — and pre-order timelines depend on a nonprofit's supply chain rather than a consumer-electronics logistics machine. Our ranking scores the Flex180 accordingly: the cheapest defensible way to start with plug-in solar in the US, best understood as a first step rather than a system.
